Van Gogh’s Bedroom in a Cup
I’ve always loved Vincent van Gogh’s small bedroom in Arles. With its slightly crooked lines, cramped space, and intensely vivid colours, the whole room feels almost alive, as if breathing.

This time, I’ve tucked it all into a cup.

The inside of the cup is lined with a full circle of blue walls, marked with obvious hand-painted brushstrokes — like emotions layered one stroke at a time. The yellow bed rests along one side, its proportions gently stretched, curving with the cup’s shape. Two chairs lean against the wall, and a window glows with pale green light in the distance.When viewed from above, the bottom of the cup becomes the floor, its wood grain swirling into a tiny spatial vortex.

The exterior stays clean and plain. The real story unfolds only when you lower your head to drink.

When the water ripples softly, the bed seems to float. When empty, the room is quiet as dusk. Pour in hot water, and the blues and yellows soften in the steam — the whole room suddenly feels gentle and warm.

I often think: if space could be folded, a cup would be the most honest container. It doesn’t show off. It only holds.To put a bedroom inside is to hold a quiet, lonely mood.
